Winter Storm Xerxes (pronounced ZERK-sees) was the 24th named storm in The Weather Channel's alphabetical list of winter storms for 2012-13.

Xerxes was named on April 13. In this case, "X" marked the Northern Plains, particularly North Dakota where the lion's share of the heavy snow fell. At one point, Interstate 94 was closed from the North Dakota/Montana border all the way east to Fargo, N.D.

Record-breaking snowfall occurred in central North Dakota. The following snowfall records were established in Bismarck, N.D.:

Snowiest calendar day, any time of year, in Bismarck history: 17.3 inches on April 14 broke the record of 15.5" on March 3, 1966.Snowiest month of April on record: 21.5 inches as of April 15, breaking the record of 18.7" in April 1984.Snowiest April day on record: 17.3 inches on April 14 broke the record of 15.2" from April 5, 1997.

From late April 13 through early April 15, Bismarck officially received 17.7 inches of snow. Along North 12th Street in Bismarck, as much as 23.5 inches of snow fell. Other North Dakota communities with 20 or more inches of snow included Center, Fullerton, Ellendale, and Edgeley.

Widespread snow totals of 6 to 10 inches fell across eastern North Dakota, adding to the concerns of .

Xerxes is named for the king of Persia who fought against the Greeks.
