The Winter Storm Team at The Weather Channel has named the upcoming winter storm Magnus based on the following potential impacts:
(MORE: Why we name winter storms)
Swath of moderate to heavy snowfall with accumulations from 2 to 6 inches across southern areas and 6 to 12 inches across northern areas. Significant drop in temperature will lead to roads icing up quickly. Stronger winds across Wisconsin through northern Michigan will create hazardous driving conditions Wednesday through Wednesday night.
Northwest Missouri, eastern Iowa through Wisconsin and northern Michigan.
Tuesday afternoon through at least Wednesday night.
Since there is the potential to produce a large swath of severe weather on the warm side of this weather system, it adds to the overall impacts of this major storm. In addition, on the cold side of this system, by Thursday, heavier lake-effect snow will develop to the southeast of the Great Lakes and may lead to a longer time frame to cover the system as MAGNUS going into the weekend.
Meaning of the name Magnus - The Father of Europe, Charlemagne the Great, in Latin: Carolus Magnus.
iWitness contributor Natalie N sent this picture from Danbury, CT. "This is a picture of the snow falling in big flakes very rapidly, and heavy as Winter Storm Luna roles in here on the East Coast. Also, actually gathering since the ground is so cold, and on the grass surface, up to half an inch! Looks like this winter is pretty normal, unlike the mild 2012."
