Winter Storm Kalani Brings Heavy Snow to Parts of Michigan, Long Island, Southeastern New England (RECAP)

Small-scale bands of heavy snow developed over parts of Lower Michigan the morning of Jan. 29, producing accumulations of a half-foot or more.

An estimated 10 inches of snow had piled up in 12 hours near Haslett and Holt, Michigan, by late morning Jan. 29. A 24-hour total of 11.1 inches was reported in Perry, Michigan, on Jan. 29. Flintand , Michigan, picked up 9.7 inches and 6 inches, respectively.

Light snow in the Motor City – 3.4 inches officially at Detroit's Metro Airport – prompted ground delaysearly afternoon Jan. 29, persisting into the early evening.

That area of heavy snow triggered a winter storm warning from the National Weather Service for several counties in Lower Michigan, including the northern suburbs of Detroit and the city of Flint. These warnings for over 2-million people met our population criterion for naming this winter storm.

Over 6 inches of snow accumulated Jan. 30in central and eastern Long Island, including at the National Weather Service office in Upton, New York, where 8.7 inches of snow was measured.

Heavier accumulations also camein from southeastern New England, including 8.4 inches in Bristol, Rhode Island, 8 inches in Plymouth, Massachusetts, and. Winds gusted to 53 mph at Woods Hole, Massachusetts, and 50 mph on Nantucket Island just after midnight Jan. 30.

Just over 1 inch of snow was reported at New York's JFK and LaGuardia airports, with 2.4 inches observed at Boston's Logan Airport on Jan. 30.

Colt Station, Pennsylvania, picked up 13 inches of snow, McKean, Pennsylvania, measured 7 inches of snow and Johnstown, Pennsylvania, reported 5.7 inches of snow. Snow-weary Erie, Pennsylvania, reported 4 to 5 inches of snow on the ground as of early Jan. 30. Some 2- to 3-inch snow totals were reported in easternNew Jersey.

A light dusting of snow was reported in parts of the Baltimore and Raleigh-Durham metro areas early Jan. 30, mainly on grassy areas.

Up to 8inches of snow was reported in the Appalachians near Terra Alta, West Virginia, with 7 inches at Sugar Mountain, North Carolina.

Winter Storm Kalani wrapped up in Downeast Maine late Jan. 30, where up to 11 inches of snow was observed near Bar Harbor and Cherryfield.
