Winter Storm Jonas Brings Big Snow, Big Problems To South, Northeast and Mid-Atlantic

A blockbuster snowmaker is making its way towards the South, Mid-Atlantic and Northeast, and bringing with it not just big snow, but as well. In the face of a blizzard warning in D.C. and Baltimore and a blizzard watch in New York City, residents are preparing for what could be a havoc-filled few days ahead. Multiple states have issued states of emergency in preparation for the wintry conditions and the storm is already affecting travel.

Through the weekend, is expected to bring heavy snow to at least 15 states, with blizzard conditions possible in Washington, D.C., Baltimore and New York City. At least 1 foot -- and up to 2 feet -- of snow is likely from Eastern Kentucky through West Virginia, Virginia, most of Maryland, D.C., northern Delaware and parts of Pennsylvania and North Carolina. Areas from Tennessee through the Ohio Valley and into the I-95 corridor through New York City can expect at least 6 inches of snow. Wind gusts up to 60 mph threaten power outages and downed trees. Additionally, high tides coupled with high winds may bring coastal flooding to the Mid-Atlantic and southeast New England.

The highest snow totals are expected around rush hour on Friday, with life-threatening conditions through Saturday.

Across the country, on Friday and Saturday. As of Thursday afternoon, for Friday, according to Flight Aware. American, Southwest and Delta are already issuing travel waivers to customers. Delta is offering full refunds while Southwest is allowing travelers to reschedule their flights without any penalties.

Amtrak announced it will operate a modified schedule in the Northeast due to the storm and encouraged passengers to monitor their travel status. Other national services along the East Coast will experience cancellations over the weekend, Amtrak said in a press release.

Maryland, Virginia, D.C., Pennsylvania, North Carolina and Tennessee all declared states of emergency on Thursday in preparation for the storm.

Jonas comes on the heels of Winter Storm Ilias, which caused major headaches on the roads from the Tennessee Valley into the Mid-Atlantic Wednesday into Thursday. Metro announced it would suspend its Metrorail, Metrobus and MetroAccess services on Friday evening and remain closed all day Saturday and Sunday.All schools in the D.C. area are closed on Friday. The District's Snow Team said they were prepared for the next round with 14 dump trucks to salt and plow major streets, more than 39,000 tons of salt and additional equipment on standby.

In Maryland, Baltimore City Schools announced that all schools would be closed on Friday.

In Virginia, Gov. Terry McAuliffe and said crews are already treating the roads, the AP reported.

West Virginia schools were closed in more than 25 counties on Thursday, with delayed classes in 19 more counties, according to the AP. Several counties announced schools will be closed on Friday as well, with sporting events cancellations piling up. As West Virginians take to the stores, the state attorney general reminded residents that price gouging is illegal as the state enters a state of preparedness.

The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey said in a statement that it was prepared with more than 200 pieces of snow equipment at airports, more than 60 pieces of equipment at bridges and tunnels, thousands of tons of salt and sand, hundreds of thousands of gallons of anti-icer chemicals, and additional equipment to maintain train tracks.

According to CBS New York, from erosion, while bulldozers are building mounds of sand along the Jersey Shore. Suffolk County police have to help anyone who gets stranded, ABC 7 NY reported.

New Jersey's largest electric and gas utility, Public Service Electric and Gas Company (PSE&G) has already scheduled additional support, the company said in a statement.

Trucks were dispatched across Philadelphia on Wednesday to brine the main roads, bridges and streets in higher elevations in advance of the snow.

In both North Carolina and South Carolina, the state Departments of Transportation began brining roads on Wednesday, with extra rock salt on hand to deice and sand to reduce traction. The American Airlines hub in Charlotte cancelled more than 650 flights for Friday and said it would not keep any planes in Charlotte overnight, the AP reported. Customers will be rebooked and refunded, and flights are expected to resume Saturday.
