Winter Storm Alejandra Brings Blizzard, Ice to the Northern Plains

A​ winter storm that brought heavy snow to California's Sierra and other parts of the mountain West went on to bring the Northern Plains blizzard conditions and accumulating ice from the Dakotas into northern Minnesota.

S​torm Summary

T​he Northern Plains is America's "", and for some in the eastern Dakotas, this was the first measurable snowfall of the season after a recent mild stretch of weather.

A​lejandra started as a dip in the jet stream over the eastern Pacific off the coast of California and Oregon on November 7th and 8th.

Parts of the high country of northern Washington state picked up 1 to 2 feet of snow. Up to 6 inches of snow was reported in the Spokane, Washington, metro area. Numerous accidents on slick roads were reported in Missoula, Montana, on November 7th.

A​lejandra consolidated over the Great Basin with a northeastward trajectory on Wednesday, Nov. 9.

Several locations in California's Sierra picked up 2 feet or more of snow. M​ammoth Mountain, California reported 32 inches of snow as of Nov. 9th.

A​lejandra also helped produce , which is located between Sacramento and Stockton, on November 8th.

E​lsewhere in the Rockies, A​lta and Park City, Utah, picked up 20 to 25 inches of snow. West Yellowstone, Montana, tallied 22 inches of snow over several days ending Wednesday afternoon.

T​he winter storm then pivoted eastward across the Rockies and brought gusty winds and heavy snow to the Dakotas.

Up to 21 inches of snow has already fallen in central North Dakota, including in the town of Mandan. Bismarck, North Dakota, has accumulated up to 20 inches of snow and 17 inches of snow at the official site, making it the second snowiest day in city history.

R​oads across North Dakota were closed, including portions of I-94, due to wintry conditions including lowered visibilities.

E​lsewhere, ice accumulations, coupled with strong winds, lead to slick roads tree damage and power outages in northeast South Dakota, southeast North Dakota and northwest Minnesota.

U​p to an inch of ice accumulation was reported in parts of northeast South Dakota, with trees damaged and power outages.

I​ce caused due to heavy ice at a golf venue in Fargo, North Dakota on Nov. 10.

A​lejandra moved into the Great Lakes and southern Canada early in the morning on November 11.

W​inter Storm Alejandra helped usher in some of the coolest air to date across nearly all of the Lower 48 and also helped pick up the remnants of Hurricane Nicole from the Southeast.
