Star-Shaped Resort Runs on Renewable Energy
Star-Shaped Resort Runs on Renewable Energy
Jan 17, 2024 3:40 PM

The Oasis Eco Resort in the United Arab Emirates is exactly that: an oasis. Centered around a spring in the desert in Liwa, the 90,000-square-foot community is completely sustainable.

Because its focal point is the spring – a precious resource in such an arid climate –it makes sense that the star-shaped resort is designed to use as little energy as possible. In fact, the entire property will give off zero emissions.

"The spring will be used for crop irrigation, fish farming and recreational activities," the architects behind the resort, Baharash Architecture, write on their website. "The spring will also provide a natural habitat for various wildlife."

On top of that, the 84 interconnecting suites, fitness center, spa, restaurant, bar, and business and research facilities will all be powered by 157,000 square feet of solar panels. All food served will be organic, and much of it locally sourced. Guests will be welcome to forage for their own food and even fish in the stream if they so desire.

A waste management system, including waste water recycling, will minimize guests' ecological impact, and biologists and conservationists will also aid in boosting the ecosystem.

According to Tech Insider, the resort also plans to shuttle electric buses to and from the Abu Dhabi International Airport.

"Ultimately, the Oasis Eco Resort will provide more than environmental benefits, such as economic and socio-cultural benefits," the architects say. "The eco resort will create job opportunities for locals, creating a more diversified economy. It will also help preserve the regions' heritage and provide greater interaction with native people."

The Oasis Eco Resort is expected to be completed in 2020.
