Rain and Snow Expected in Northeast Thursday Night and Friday, But a Significant East Coast Storm Is Unlikely
Dec 27, 2024 2:50 AM

At a Glance

A disturbance will bring rain and snow to the Northeast on Friday. The chance of a significant East Coast storm has decreased.

Rain, snow and colder temperatures will arrive in the Northeast late this week, but there won't be a significant East Coast storm.

A strong jet stream disturbance with colder air will move across the Great Lakes and Northeast Thursday night into Friday. The jet stream disturbance will bring light rain and snow to the region.

There will also be a strengthening area of low pressure off the East Coast on Friday. The current forecast track of that low is expected to be far enough east in order to prevent it from bringing significant impacts to the Northeast.

For now, expect light snow or a rain-and-snow mix in parts of the interior Northeast Thursday night into Friday. Rain is expected near the Interstate 95 corridor, but that could change to a brief period of snow Friday night.

Accumulations should be modest, generally on the order of 3 inches or less in parts of the interior Northeast.

Purple-shaded locations may see either rain or snow. Areas in pink are expected to see sleet or freezing rain (ice).)
