NASA Captures Haunting Image of the Sun

This combination of images of the sun looks oddly like a Jack-O-Lantern.

Looks like the solar system is getting into the Halloween spirit. Just in time for the most terrifying night of the year, NASA has released an incredible image of the fiery surface of the sunlooking eerily like a Tim Burton-style Jack-O-Lantern, Time reports.

The photo is actually made up of thousands of images taken on October 8 by the Scientific Visualization Studio of the sun’s active regions, filtered by wavelength, according to yahoo.com.

"The active regions appear brighter because those are areas that emit more light and energy— markers of an intense and complex set of magnetic fields hovering in the sun’s atmosphere," according to NASA.gov.

The two particular wavelengths that the image was filtered by, 171 and 193 Angstroms, are typically colorized in gold and yellow. Whether NASA intentionally dressed the sun up in Halloween colors isn't clear, but the end result certainly looks like a grinning pumpkin.

Strangely enough, theimage was captured on the same day that the haunting blood moon cast a spooky glow over the Earth, Mashable points out. Coincidence? We think not.
