Once again, snow, freezing rainand sleet made a mess of the morning commute from the Southeast into the Mid-Atlantic on the heels of a wintry mess from .
The wintry mess set up when fresh, cold air surged down the Piedmont and coastal plain of Virginia and the Carolinas.
Then, a disturbance in the jet stream swooped in with sufficient moisture and rising air to generate precipitation over that wedge of cold air at the surface.

Whileprecipitation was not particularly heavy, it only took a small amount of snow, sleet or freezing rain to cause travel problems.
One-eighth of an inch of ice accumulation was observed at the National Weather Service office in Wakefield, Virginia early Wednesday morning. Many bridges were reported icy in Randolph County, North Carolina. Some bridges and overpasses became slippery on Interstate 540 in the Raleigh metro.
Multiple accidents were reported in Alamance and Mitchell Counties, North Carolina. A dusting of around 0.5 inch of snow blanketed Buena Vista and Culpepper, Virginia.
