The university reported on Friday that days of accumulating snow and ice weighed down the air-inflated roof of the building also known as "The Bubble," eventually .

Lubbock, Texas, was one of many cities in the state to accumulate upwards of a foot of snow earlier in the week as .

"Our foremost concern is the safety of our student athletes and staff who utilize the facility," Texas Tech Director of Athletics Kirby Hocutt said in a statement. "We will conduct a structural study to explore the extent of the damage and then decide on the feasibility of repairing it."

The university to take the ATC's place. Construction on the new Sports Performance Center is set to begin in the spring.
