Global Coral Bleaching Event: Stunning Photos Show the World's At-Risk Reefs

This photo shows a before and after of the bleaching in the waters surrounding American Samoa. The first photo was taken in December 2014 and the second was taken in February 2015.

Photos captured by the XL Catlin Seaview Survey show global bleaching events of coral reefs around the world and the beauty that is at stake.

The study began in September 2012 on the Great Barrier Reef, with the team surveying 32 reefs along its entire length and expanding into the Coral Sea. The aim was to study the reef across its full depth range. After on both the Great Barrier Reef and in the Coral Sea, the survey has now gone global.
