Asteroid Nearly a Mile Wide Will Fly By Earth Wednesday

On Wednesday, an asteroid almost a mile wide will sail past Earth, coming closer than it ever has within the last 400 years.

According to NASA, the , or roughly 683,508 miles, of Earth. It will be one of the strongest asteroid radar targets of this year.

The flyby will be the closest of an asteroid of this size since a September 2004 encounter with an asteroid known as 4179 Toutatis that came within four lunar distances, according to NASA.

“We believe ,” wrote NASA. The space agency says that rocky objects smaller than a kilometer, or roughly half a mile, were to hit Earth, it would likely cause local or regional damage in the impact area.

2014 JO25 was first spotted by the Mount Lemmon Survey in Arizona in 2014, according to NASA. It will come very close to the sun until April 19, making it favorable for observing.
