Ten stray dogs that were displaced during the Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia will be getting a new home.

The canines arrived at Washington Dulles International Airport in Virginia on Friday and were transported, by Human Society International, to the Washington Animal Rescue League.

The two groups partnered to provide “loving homes” for the pets in the United States, after Sochi officials used harsh tactics to rid the city of its stray dogs.

“Our goal is to protect street dogs from cruel and unnecessary killing programs – like the one employed by Sochi officials to ‘clean up’ in advance of the Olympics – by working with the governments to create humane and effective dog population management programs,” Kelly O’Meara, director of HIS Companion Animals and Engagement, said in a statement.

The Washington Animal Rescue League will care for the animals and will be responsible for their adoption.
