By the end of the first full week of January 2015, the skies will have already treated us to a meteor shower, a comet flyby visible through binoculars and the year’s first full moon.

The , which peaked late Sunday, Jan. 4 into Monday, Jan. 5, didn’t disappoint. “This is the only night in the month when the moon is in the sky all night long,” Space.com reports. “The rest of the month, the moon spends at least some time in the daytime sky.”

It gets its name from the belief that the moon rose when “ in hunger outside the villages,” according to the Old Farmer’s Almanac. Sometimes it’s also called the Old Moon or the Snow Moon. It’s the first full moon since the Dec. 21, 2014 solstice.
