Winter Storm Maya is dumping heavy snow and sleet from the upper Mississippi Valley into the Great Lakes and Northeast on Tuesday, causing major traffic problems, downing trees and causing power outages.
Dozens of school districts cancelled classes or had delayed openings across the Midwest and Northeast on Tuesday. States of emergency were declared in New Jersey and Pennsylvania ahead of the storm's arrival.
The storm was responsible for at least one death – a 71-year old man who was a passenger in a vehicle that went off Interstate 80 in Hope Township, New Jersey, and struck a tree Tuesday morning.

The storm pivoted into the Plains and Midwest Monday after dumping snow and slowing travel in the Pacific Northwest over the weekend.

On Friday, schools and offices closed early in the Seattle area, and commuters swarmed the roads in an effort to get home before the heaviest snow arrived. This led to major slowdowns and lengthy travel times.
