Southern Storms Kill at Least 2; Damage Reported as Tornadoes Hit Tampa Area

Severe storms and tornadoes battered parts of the South and East Coast for the third day, leaving additional damageFriday afternoon in the Tampa area.

Several tornado warnings were issued, and the storms were accompanied by multiple twisters in areas near Tampa and St. Petersburg. A confirmed tornado caused structural damage and downed trees in the Seminole area, west of Tampa.

In a tweet sent Friday afternoon, the Pinellas County Sheriff's Office said inSeminole. Another injury , according to WFLA.com, though additional details were not immediately available.

Hillsborough County Schools spokeswoman Tanya Arja told The Weather Channel that school buses were held to wait out the storms. There were no reports of damage at any of the county’s schools, she also said.

In Pasco County, several homes , Bay News 9 reported. The National Weather Service surveyed the damage and confirmed an EF1 tornado was in progress Friday afternoon and caused the damage in Pasco County.

Another EF1 tornado was confirmed just north of Spring Hill, where 17 homes had roof damage, an NWS storm report said.

At least 70,000 homes and businesses lost power in the area because of the storms, according to . Across the South, more than 150,000 customers lost power during the three-day severe weather outbreak that spawned more than 30 tornadoes.

Storms Claim Two Lives

Two deaths have been confirmed in the wake of the storms. In Texas, a female Waller County deputy died late Wednesday night while on a rescue call.

Deputy Loren Vasquez, 23, reportedly lost control of her vehicle when she ran into wateron a roadway. The , flippedand landed upside down in a water-filled ditch, according to a press release.

Once freed from thevehicle, she was taken to a localhospital, where she died. It was just her third night on solo patrol duty.

"Words will never express what our office is going thru and we can only ask for your prayers," said a statement by Sheriff R. Glenn Smith 's Facebook site.

In Mississippi, 19-year-old Jayla Gray of Jackson,a student at Alcorn State University,diedThursday morning after she hit a treethat fell onto a Claiborne County road.

An EF2 tornado tore through parts of Natchez, Mississippi, early Thursday morning, downing power lines and prompting rescues, according to the NWS.

"It tore up trees and old businesses that had been sitting awhile. Everybody is without power," Kevin Bryant, a resident of Port Bryant, Mississippi, northeast of Natchez, told the AP. "It definitely woke you up. That wind was howling."

Planes Damaged at Baton Rouge Airport

Louisiana was clobbered by powerful storms early Thursday morning, including in Baton Rouge, where the NWS said several single-engine planes were damaged at the Baton Rouge Metro Airport. One plane, which was reportedly tossed about 1,000 feet from its initial resting place, was destroyed, the report added.

Airport spokesman Jim Caldwell told the Advocate that by the strong winds.

Significant wind damage was reported afteran EF2 tornado tore through parts of Pineville and Alexandria, just before midnight Wednesday night. Cars and buildings were damaged and trees and power lines were downed in Rapides Parish in central Louisiana.

Three people were injuredThursday morning inWashington Parish,Louisiana, when a pair of, WWL-TV reported. Two people were hurt and taken to a hospital in Bogalusa after the Bogalusa Daily News reported. A woman in her 80s was injured when a wall and the roof of her home collapsed around her.None of the injuries were life-threatening.

Twister Damages Structures in Kentucky

On Wednesday evening, an EF1 tornado hit central Kentucky, leaving several buildings damaged.In Hardin County, , according to WAVE-TV in Louisville. No injuries were reported.

Severe storms also passed through southeastern Texas Wednesday afternoon and evening, and heavy rainfall flooded some streets. In the Houston area, , according to KTRK-TV, though no major roads had to be shut down.

"It's crazy. The power is out. It was raining a little bit, but ,"Jesse James Morton, a resident of Chambers County, east of Houston, told KTRK as locals cleaned up the damage from Wednesday night.

Storms Rattle Nerves Along Florida Panhandle

Residents along the Gulf Coast paused their cleanup from Hurricane Michael to take shelter from the storms as they rolled through Thursday, especially in the Florida Panhandle. Disaster centers temporarily closed because of the storms, and officials warned residents that additional trees or branches could be felled by the winds, the AP reported.

But it appeared the storms didn't do any more serious damage in the disaster area.

"I think people are not wanting to see more wind and rain," Lynn Haven, Florida, mayor Margo Anderson told the AP. "It puts everyone on edge. It's frightening."

Schools were delayed or closed Thursday in parts of several states due to damage and power outages, the AP also said.

The storm threat continues for the Southeast through Friday.Damaging winds and a few tornadoes are possible, particularly from southeastern Louisiana eastward across central and southern Alabama, southwestern Georgia and the Florida Panhandle, including areas ravaged by Hurricane Michael last month.
