South Florida had record cold temperatures Monday, and while they pale in comparison to what the Midwest is experiencing, the temperatures are still abnormal for residents accustomed to escaping winter's grip.

Marathon, in the middle Florida Keys, had a high temperature of 64 degrees Monday. That may seem pleasant to Midwesterners right now, but it was the coldest high temperature on record there for Jan. 28, dating to 1950.

Even chillier was Naples, which only rose to 57 degrees Monday, also setting a record for the coldest high temperature on Jan. 28. It was the city's coldest high since February 2015.

Monday's High Temperatures

Although not a record, Monday's high in Fort Myers was just 56 degrees, the coldest high temperature there since January 2010.

The relatively cold temperatures were the result of a small area of high pressure that brought cooler, drier air behind a cold front that soaked the state over the weekend.

As a result, low temperatures plummeted into the 30s and 40s in South Florida Tuesday morning.

While those readings are no comparison to wind chills in the , it's quite chilly for South Florida standards. Average lows in Miami in late January are about 60 degrees.

Although the worst of the cold will be pinned to the nation's northern tier through late-week, Florida will continue to see below-average temperatures the next few mornings. Lows are likely to hold in the 50s both Wednesday and Thursday morning in South Florida.
