A group of 20 Minnesota kids braved minus 28 degree temperatures to set a record for coldest hockey game played.While Guinness doesn't have a previous holder, the kids broke college and NHL outdoor game records.The application for the record will take a few months to be reviewed.
In the State of Hockey, nothing will stop kids from getting outside and lacing up the skates, not even temperatures 50 degrees colder than what it takes to freeze the surface they skate on.
Around 20 kids from Rochester, Minnesota, hit the outdoor rink before the sun came up Thursday morning with temperatures reading a brisk 28 degrees below zero in an attempt to set the , according to KIMT in Rochester.
“On the way over here the ,” Andy Cousin, a local hockey coach who helped organize the game, told KTTC. “We were able to get in three very quick periods with very bundled up hockey players, but we’re optimistic that our game today will in fact be the coldest hockey game played in the history of the Guinness Book of World Records.”

The kids were able to squeeze in three one-minute periods before they were lured back inside the house of Mike and Mindy Burman to warm up and fill up with snacks and drinks.
“They’re making some awesome memories. They’ll never forget they came out on the coldest day in Minnesota to play hockey instead of just sitting in front of a screen playing video games or watching TV,” said Mindy Burman.
According to Cousin, the application to claim the record of coldest hockey game has been sent in, but there's currently no game on record to beat in Guinness's database.
While they may have to wait a few months to call themselves "Guinness World Record Holders," the kids that played in the Rochester game can claim to have played in the coldest hockey game on record.
Just two weeks earlier and 300 miles to the north, Bemidji State University and Michigan Tech University played the started in 2001, according to College Hockey Inc.

Bemidji State and Michigan Tech played along Lake Bemidji's south shore where temperatures dipped to minus 18 degrees by the time the game had ended around 10:30 p.m. following an overtime period that saw BSU claim a 4-3 victory. to witness the game at the temporary Hockey Day Minnesota Rink, Bemidji State Athletics reported.
The Rochester game stands even colder than the coldest National Hockey League game on record, the 2003 Heritage Classic.

The crowd for the game in Rochester may have only been a few shivering parents huddled around the fire, but it'll definitely be a game to remember for 20 young Minnesotans.
