Photos From Space: ISS Astronauts Reid Wiseman and Alexander Gerst Capture Earth Like You've Never Seen
Sep 20, 2024
Reid Wiseman's Photos From Space Hurricane Arthur, spinning off the East Coast of the United States in this image, was captured by Wiseman on July 3, 2014. (Twitter/Reid Wiseman) Here's your chance to see Earth from an angle that few humans have witnessed firsthand. Astronauts Reid Wiseman and Alexander Gerst are currently aboard the International Space Station, but they haven't been keeping their incredible view of our planet to themselves. Instead, they're regularly posting images to their social media accounts...
Amazing Supernova Images That Remind Us How Beautiful The Universe Really Is
Sep 20, 2024
To celebrate the birthday of the Chandra X-ray Observatory earlier this week, NASA has released a new set of stunning supernova images for everyone to ogle. The first pair — Tycho and G292.0 — trace out the expanding debris and shockwaves of supernova remnants. The second pair, known as The Crab Neubla and 3C58, highlight the clouds of high-energy particles produced by pulsars. According to NASA, Chandra has "helped revolutionize our understanding of the universe," since it was first launched...
Scott Carpenter, One of NASA's First Astronauts, Dies at 88
Sep 20, 2024
Godspeed, Scott Carpenter. The United States’ fourth astronaut to fly in space and the second to orbit the Earth, Scott Carpenter, 88, died on Thursday (Oct. 10) after suffering a recent stroke. The original Mercury 7 astronaut was being cared for at a hospice center in Denver when he passed. Carpenter was initially expected to make a full recovery from the stroke, but his condition worsened this week, sources close to his family shared. [Aurora 7: Astronaut Scott Carpenter’s Mercury...
European Space Agency's Comet-Chasing Rosetta Spacecraft Could Make History Wednesday
Sep 20, 2024
After 10 years in space, the Rosetta spacecraft is set to attempt its biggest accomplishment yet. A 4-billion-mile journey is expected to end Wednesday when the European Space Agency's spacecraft will finally catch up with the 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko comet, according to SPACE.com. If successful, it will be the first time any spacecraft has orbited a comet, the report added. In November, Rosetta will drop a small lander known as Philae onto the comet, the Christian Science Monitor reports.Philae will be used...
European Space Agency's Comet-Chasing Rosetta Spacecraft Catches Up With Comet
Sep 20, 2024
After 10 years in space, the Rosetta spacecraft has achieved its biggest accomplishment yet. Scientists and spectators at ESA's mission control in Darmstadt, Germany, cheered Wednesday after the spacecraft successfully completed its final thrust to swing alongside comet 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko. ESA chief Jean-Jacques Dordain says the probe's rendezvous with 67P is an important milestone in Rosetta's life. It isthe first time any spacecraft has orbited a comet, according to Space.com. Perseid Meteor Shower Approaching, But Supermoon May Steal Some of Its Thunder
Sep 20, 2024
Above: Images from pastPerseidshowers Typically, the best time to catch a meteor shower is during peak viewing days. But not this month. The Perseids, which run from mid-July to mid-August, will peakAug. 11, 12 and 13, according to EarthSky.Normally, you could see as many as 100 shooting stars an hour under prime viewing conditions, but light from this month's full moon will upstage the meteor shower. The closest supermoon of the year will shine August 10, so only the brightest...
Feared Asteroid Turns Out to Be A Pile Of Rubble
Sep 20, 2024
An asteroid that had astronomers shaking in their boots for fear it would collide with Earth has turned out to be a weak pile of rubble. According to our friends at SPACE.com: "A study in 2003 suggested that if asteroid 1950 DA smashed into the Atlantic Ocean, the resulting blast could pack as much energy as a 60,000-megaton explosion, causing tsunami waves at least 200 feet high to crash against the East Coast. Unexpectedly, the scientists found 1950 DA is...
Mars Boulder Leaves Trail Visible From Space
Sep 20, 2024
The latest discovery made by NASA's Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter is the trail left behind by a giant boulder that rolled down a hill on the Red Planet. NASA analysis of the rock's shadow suggests that the boulder is about 20 feet tall and 11.5 feet wide. The trail carved out by the boulder, which landed upright, is visible from space. "The boulder's trail down the slope is about one-third of a mile long," the space agency said. "The trail has...
NASA's Spitzer Telescope Observes Asteroid Collision, Possible Birth of Planet
Sep 20, 2024
NASA's Spitzer Space Telescope has captured an eruption of dust around a young star, possibly the collision of two large asteroids, which scientists say could lead to the birth of planets. "We think two big asteroids crashed into each other, creating a huge cloud of grains the size of very fine sand, which are now smashing themselves into smithereens and slowly leaking away from the star," lead author and graduate student Huan Meng of the University of Arizona, Tucson, said...
Newly Discovered Asteroid 2014 RC Will Buzz Earth This Weekend
Sep 20, 2024
An asteroid scientists discovered only a few days ago will buzz Earth this weekend. At its closest approach, the 60-foot space rock will pass a safe 25,000 miles over New Zealand at 2:18 EDT Sunday, NASA says. That's about one-tenth the distance between here and the moon. It's also beyond the orbit of our highest communication and weather satellites. (MORE: Six Ideas For Cleaning Up Space Junk) Asteroid 2014 RC was discovered on Aug. 31 by the Catalina Sky Survey...
Watch Live: Last Supermoon of the Year
Sep 20, 2024
Get ready for the last supermoon of the year! Skywatchers can see the full moon, also called the Harvest Moon, this month, beginning Monday evening. While clearer skies will settle in from Oklahoma and Texas into the Mississippi Valley through New England, rain over the Southeast and Southwest will make for poor viewing conditions in person. That's why weather.com is bringing you a live feed from Slooh.com, above, which is presented by the Institute of Astrophysics of the Canary Islands,...
