Major Flooding on Rivers in the South and Ohio Valley Can Be Seen From Space

Multiple rounds of heavy rain have soaked the South and Ohio Valley this month, sending many rivers above flood stage, including some that can be seen from space.

The animation below is from NASA satellite imagery and it shows various swollen rivers on Sunday in comparison to about a month ago on Jan. 25. You can see the increased water in the larger rivers that are labeled, but if you look closely, several other flooded waterways are visible too.

The Tennessee River in Perryville, Tennessee, was forecast to crest midweek at its for that location in records dating to at least 1897. Farther upstream, Savannah, Tennessee, has seen the Tennessee River rise to its dating to 1897.

on the Yocona River in Oxford, Mississippi, and the Little Tallahatchie River in Etta, Mississippi.

Major flooding is forecast to persist on the Ohio River in , and , into at least this weekend or next week.

Floodwaters will move farther downstream into the lower Mississippi Valley this week and next week. Major flooding is forecast on the Mississippi River in several locations, including , and .

Estimated rainfall this month in parts of the South and Ohio Valley.

The heavy rain this month in the mid-South and Ohio Valley has propelled several cities to one of their wettest Februaries on record.

Nashville has seen 13.47 inches of rain this month, easily surpassing the previous February record of 12.37 inches set in 1880.

(15.48 inches), (12.83 inches), and (12.60 inches), have also had a record-wet February.
