Heavy Rain From Warm Side of Diego Leads to Deadly Crash, Water Rescues in Texas

Two men died in a multi-vehicle crash Friday. The crash is being blamed on the heavy rains. High water rescues were reported near Houston Friday night. Many roadways and highways in eastern Texas were impassable at times due to flooding.

Heavy rainsfrom the warm side of Winter Storm Diego have triggered deadly flash flooding in Texas and prompted severalwater rescues.

The Harris County Sheriff’s Office said in a multi-vehicle crashon Beltway 8 near Wallisville Road in northeastHarris County. The highway was temporarily closed in both directions at the height of rush hour.

Earlier in the day, weather forced aground stop at Houston's.Seven flights were diverted to other airports. Even after the ground stop was lifted, arriving flights were still being delayed up to an hour and 15 minutes.

High water rescues were also reported Friday in Houston and San Antonio. Numerous roadways and highways in eastern Texas were impassable at times due to the flash flooding.

Several bayous in Texas' Harris County Friday after nearly 6 inches of rain fell in some areas, county officials report. Street flooding forced several drivers to near downtown Houston, KPRC2 reports.

Texas Gov. Greg Abbott ordered the State Operations Center to increase the levels of readiness, and he made state resources available to assist local officials in their response efforts.

“I encourage all Texans to stay alert to potentially hazardous road conditions and changing weather patterns,”Abbott said in a news release. “Texas is prepared to respond and offer the necessary assistance to local communities as they deal with the impact of this storm.”

Saturday into Saturday night, rain is expected to continue across the South, including waterlogged parts of south Georgia and north Florida.

Rain will come to an end in Texas by Saturday night and in the lower Mississippi Valley by early Sunday.

The chance for rain, however, will linger through Sunday and into Monday in parts of the Southeast.
