Haboob Invades Phoenix, Knocking Out Power to 100,000

Severe weather and a haboob went through the Phoenix area on Monday evening.The storms knocked out power to 100,000 homes and businesses and hindered travel.A Major League Baseball game was delayed when the storms knocked out some of the Chase Field lights.

At least 100,000 customers were left without power Monday evening as a powerful round of severe storms rolled through the Phoenix metro area, spawning a haboob that made travel dangerous.

The outages multiplied quickly as reports of downed power lines became more widespread Monday evening, blamed on, according to the ArizonaRepublic. At the Deer Valley Airport in northern Phoenix, wind gusts as high as 74 mph were reported during the storms.

The storms caused delays of more than an hour and a half Monday night at Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport, the Republic also reported.

On Arizona roads, the blowing dust triggered by the haboob forced authorities to warn drivers to be extra cautious. Flooding on Interstate 17 forced officials to temporarily close the roadway at Sunset Point,the Arizona Department of Transportation said.

At Chase Field, a game between the Arizona Diamondbacks and Texas Rangers was delayed for more than 21 minutes when some of the lights were knocked out by the power outage, according to the Associated Press.
