Staff members used the inn's four-wheel-drive vehicle to take stranded motorists back to their cars beginning about 8 a.m. Friday.

Jonathan Erdman, senior meteorologist at weather.com, said, "A large gyre of low pressure spinning in the Celtic Sea off the tip of Cornwall wrapped moisture into cold air that was in place over the south of England. This low will shift southeast into the Mediterranean Sea this weekend, taking any chances of additional snow with it."

In addition to the people at the Jamaica Inn, 350 students and 26 staffers were stranded overnight at a school in Cornwall.

Mark Wardle, the principal of Callywith College in Bodmin, told Cornwall Live he to take students home weren't going to make it through the snow.

Asda, a supermarket retailer, donated more than $1,000 worth of comforters, blankets and pillows, Wardle said.
