Streets were closed and drivers advised to use caution Thursday morning due to flooding in parts of coastal South Carolina.

Several roads were shut down in Charleston during the morning rush hour, but most had reopened by lunchtime.

"Emergency Management officials urge motorists to on the roadways, allow extra time for commuting and use alternate routes to avoid areas of known flooding," the city tweeted Wednesday night, ahead of the flooding.

Residents were urged to use caution in nearby Pawleys Island, where a photo from the police department showed standing on roads.

The water was pushed inland from the shoreline by a combination of northeast winds from a coastal storm and unusually high tides. Similar conditions are expected to persist at least through the weekend for southern South Carolina, Georgia and into northeast Florida. The worst flooding will likely come with Saturday morning's 9:40 a.m. EDT high tide in Charleston.

"We have many more high tides during which we expect coastal flooding through the weekend, possibly beyond that," said weather.com senior meteorologist Jonathan Erdman.

Weather in some areas could make matters worse.

"The problem with Saturday morning’s high tide is there could also be rain falling at times," added Erdman. "If any of those areas of rain overlap areas with coastal flooding, that could compound the problem."
