Chicago Moves to Help Homeless Population Ahead of 'Life-Threatening' Cold

The City of Chicago and nonprofit groups are moving to keep the city's homeless population safe during the cold spell.Temperatures could reach minus 46 degrees with the wind chill, a dangerous level for those living on the streets.Warming centers and CTA buses will be opened to those who need it.

Both the City of Chicago and nonprofit organizations are moving to open warming centers and utilize city buses in an effort to keep the city's safe during a life-threatening cold snap taking over the Midwest.

The city plans to move CTA buses near large camps to serve as warming stations for those who refuse to leave their belongings or pets.

“There definitely is a large amount of people who will go and seek shelter, ,” Sandi Robinson, co-founder of ChiGivesBack, told Earther. “Our main focus is for the people who don’t want to go inside, to make sure that they have everything they need to survive outside because what we’re receiving in Chicago are [temperatures] I’ve never experienced in my lifetime.”

The Salvation Army announced they will have mobile feeding and homeless outreach crews making over 30 stops throughout Chicago to help those on the streets. They also plan on feeding those utilizing CTA's warming buses.
