The morning after having too much beer (or wine, or spirits), collegiates find the best cure is to start the day with more beer. (That's why those hair-of-the dog Sunday brunches are so popular.)
A new study reports beer may cure more than a hangover. Japanese researchers say it could help fight off a winter cold.
The Sapporo Medical University found the chemical humulone can curb the respiratory syncytial virus (RSV). Humulone is the chemical compound found in hops, the plant that gives beer its bitter taste.
Although RSV is most dangerous in infants and toddlers, the virus can cause cold-like symptoms in adults.
Before you head to the fridge instead of the pharmacy for your next cold, there are two things you should know.
First, the study was done at Sapporo Medical University, and funded by one of Japan's oldest breweries.
Secondly, you'll have to drink a lot of beer - about 30 cans worth - to get the scientific benefits. (And after 30 cans of beer, the cold will probably be the least of your worries).
Researchers tell AFP they're looking into the ability of adding humulone to food as an alternative.
