Waves overwhelmed the California teen after he fell through the blowhole. The 2-day search for the teen was called off on Monday.

An 18-year-old man is presumed dead after falling through a blowhole at a state beach south of Carmel-by-the-Sea, California.

Braxton Cooper Stuntz of Carmel came across the blowhole Saturday morning while along a cliff at Garrapata State Beach, the Monterey County Sheriff's Office reported.

Stuntz reportedly tried to take a closer look into the blowhole but slipped and fell about 15 feet onto a rocky beach below. When he landed, he to two of his friends above, KSBW reported.

Unharmed in the initial fall, Stuntz became overwhelmed by 14-foot waves that were crashing in around him every nine seconds or so. His friends soon lost sight of him and called 911.

"Huge that day came in and it just seemed to happen instantaneously that he was swept out" EMT trainer Aletha Parker of Mid Coast Fire told KSBW.
