Barges Break Loose on Mississippi River; At Least One Hits Bridge

At least one barge appeared to be wedged against a pillar of the Bayview Bridge.Tugboats were working to free the barge.The bridge remained open to vehicle traffic.

Several barges broke loose from a towboat Monday afternoon on the Mississippi River between Illinois and Missouri.

At least one that crosses the river at Quincy, Illinois, WGEM.com reported. The bridge was still open to vehicle traffic and there did not appear to be any damage.

At least were loose at one point, according to KHQA.com. Photos and showed one of the barges resting against the bridge. Another barge could also be seen.

Several tugboats were working to push the barges away. It wasn't clear if they were stuck on the river bottom or wedged against the bridge's pillars.

A riverboat captain told KHQA that the barges were part of a 15-barge tow that had broken apart.

Weather did not appear to be a factor in the incident.
