Heavy fog in the Austin, Texas, area early Tuesday led to a 20-vehicle pileup that injured at least 56 people.

Authorities say were taken to area hospitals for treatment, the Austin-Travis County Emergency Management Service reported.

The wreck occurred just after midnight New Year's Eve on state Highway 130 just east of Austin.

Austin-Bergstrom Airport and Camp Mabry each reported visibility reduced to about 2 miles, with temperatures above freezing.

There was no dense fog advisory in effect, but the National Weather Service mentioned patchy dense fog was expected through 4 a.m. Tuesday in an update.
