This slideshow has been edited to include more baby animals born at zoos; the meerkats appear after the newborn Giant Panda twins and a sloth bear making his debut at the Smithsonian National Zoo.
Weighing less than a tenth of a pound, meerkats Fips and Luck were born on April 23 to fanfare at the in western Germany, according to newspaper . Unfortunately, their mother rejected them after giving birth.
The two young meerkats have since been raised by the zoo staff. Though it seems the cute creatures would need to adjust to life without their mother, it was actually the staff who had to do the most adjusting.
For the first eight days, Lucky and Fips had to be fed every two hours -- even at night, the reports. After eight days the meerkats began sleeping for five-hour stretches. They have since moved to a new area in the zoo where their new home is furnished with a pile of sand, a sleeping box, and their pet, a stuffed pony.
In addition to Lucky and Fips, the photo gallery above features other cute newborns. For more information on Fips and Luck, visit the Aachen Zoo’s or page.
