For the first time, the Zika virus has been spread from state to state. Officials in Texas announced Monday that a resident caught the virus during a trip to Miami and brought it back to the Lone Star State.
“This is ,” said the Texas health department in a release. “The case will be classified as ‘travel-associated’ and is being investigated for more details.”
According to the release, health officials were able to link the case to Miami travel after evaluating the El Paso County resident’s travel dates and the date that the symptoms began. This will be the county’s first Zika case. Officials have found no other evidence of the virus or local transmission.

The contraction of the virus comes just a week after . On Aug. 9, officials confirmed the baby passes away shortly after birth. The mother contracted the virus while she was still carrying the baby in Latin America. It is considered Texas’ first Zika-related death.
So far, Texas has reported 108 cases associated with travel to areas with active Zika transmission, according to the health department. The count includes three pregnant women, two infants infected before birth and one person who contracted the disease after sexual contact with a traveler.
" and we're doing everything we can to delay local transmission here,"Texas health department spokesperson Carrie Williams said in a statement obtained by USA Today. "This is another significant development, but not an unexpected one."
, Texas Health and Human Services Executive Commissioner Charles Smith said in a statement obtained by The Dallas Morning News. Through October, eligible women on Medicaid can go directly to a pharmacist to pick up the spray.

In most people, the virus causes only a mild and brief illness, but it can provoke fetal death and severe brain effects in the children of women infected during pregnancy.
There is no vaccine and the main defense is to avoid getting bitten by mosquitoes. Zika can also spread through unprotected sex with someone who is infected.
The Texas health department recommends wearing pants and long-sleeved shirts to cover exposed skin, using screens or closing windows and doors to keep mosquitoes out of the home, and removing standing water in and around the home.
