Winter Storm Xerxes blanketed the Dakotas and Minnesota with snow, freezing rain, and blizzard conditions, knocking out power and closing interstates on Sunday and Monday.
"This latest winter storm can only be compounding the misery for folks in the region," says weather.com meteorologist Nick Wiltgen. "Fargo has yet to reach 50 degrees this year, and we don't expect them to do so this week. Never before have they gotten past April 17 without a 50-degree day, and that's a 132-year-old record that is about to be crushed.
"But beyond the annoyance of a prolonged winter, the added snowpack and the delay of the inevitable spring warmup just raises the odds of a very serious spring flood on the Red River."

Nearly two feet of additional snow had fallen in Bismarck when Xerxes finally wrapped up on Monday, leaving behind cold temperatures and an extensive cleanup. In Fargo, where the threat of massive flooding rises with each additional snow event, Xerxes dumped nearly a foot of snow.
Officials closed Interstate 94 across most of North Dakota on Sunday due to snow drifts and blowing snow, and nearly the entire lower half of the state was under No Travel Advisories at one point during Xerxes.
The northern portion of the state experienced plenty of its own issues on roadways, but snowfall totals stayed relatively smaller than the totals reported in North Dakota. In and around towns like Mobridge, Eureka and Gettysburg, travel was discouraged, while slick and slushy roads were reported across nearly all of the northern half of the state.
Areas near Hecla and Hoven received the highest snowfall total -- 16 inches each.

Little Eagle was the first city to turn in a report of at least six inches of snow, and the conditions in that town were made even worse by strong winds that were blowing the snow, creating near-zero visibility.
Many of the areas that received the highest snowfall totals last week from Winter Storm Walda received little, if any, additional snowfall from Xerxes.
Winter storm warnings were issued for the northern half of the state, while advisories were issued for counties all the way down to Minneapolis and further south. Like the Dakotas, some towns in Minnesota received virtually no break from the snowfall between storms Walda and Xerxes.
The town of Moorhead, directly across the state line from Fargo, N.D., received nearly nine inches of snowfall from Xerxes, one of Minnesota's highest recordings from the storm.
The Minnesota Twins were forced to cancel Sunday's game against the New York Mets due to snowy conditions, and the team announced the game would be made up Aug. 19.
