Winter Storm Virgil: Photos and Snow Reports

The Weather Channel named Winter Storm Virgil on Friday, March 22, 2013.

Winter Storm Virgil dumped a long swath of snow roughly along the length of the I-70 corridor from Utah east to Maryland, along with parts of some adjacent states. The storm moved out to sea and away from the Mid-Atlantic on the evening of March 25, 2013. Below are some select snowfall totals from the storm.

Utah

Top snow total: 13 inches at Alta

Salt Lake City metro: Officially 1.1 inches at Salt Lake City International Airport, but southern parts of the Salt Lake Valley saw as much as 9.5 inches of snow (specifically in West Jordan).

Virgil Snow Totals

Wyoming

Top snow totals: 12 to 16 inches of snow were reported in the foothills south of Lander, with 4.9 inches in Lander itself.

Other reports: Five to eight inches fell at multiple locations in the Casper area. Cheyenne officially received 1.6 inches.

Colorado

Top snow total: 19.4 inches at Beulah.

Official Denver snowfall total: 11.6 inches at Denver International Airport.

Nebraska

Top snow total: 7 inches near Big Springs, Lamar and Imperial, all in western Nebraska.

Kansas

Top snow total: 15.0 inches at the National Weather Service in Goodland.

Other totals: 5.3 inches at Wichita Mid-Continent Airport; 9.5 inches in Olathe (Kansas City metro) through 10 a.m. Sunday.

Oklahoma

Top snow total: 3.0 inches at South Coffeyville near the Kansas border Sunday morning.

Missouri

Top snow total: 15.1 inches in Harvester.

Other reports: Up to 10 inches in the Kansas City metro near Independence and in Harrisonville. In the St. Louis area, officially 12.4 inches at Lambert St. Louis International Airport (2nd snowiest calendar day on record).

Thundersnow reported in the Kansas City metro area early Sunday morning, and in the St. Louis area late Sunday morning.

Virgil Snow Totals

Iowa

Top snow total: 6.8 inches near Burlington.

Illinois

Top snow total: 18.5 inches in Springfield and near Taylorville.The official Sunday total of 17.0 inches in Springfield was that city's snowiest calendar day in any month on record there, breaking the old record of 15.0 inches on Feb. 28, 1900.

Other: Reports of thundersnow in parts of southern Illinois late Sunday morning.

Indiana

Top snow total: 12 inches near Peru and Hartford City.

Official Indianapolis total: 9 inches

Ohio

Top snow total: 10 inches in New Bremen.

Kentucky

Top snow total: 6 inches at Black Mountain.

West Virginia

Top snow total: 13 inches in Terra Alta.

Virginia

Top snow total: 8 inches in Warm Springs, Lacey Spring and Woodstock.

Official Roanoke snow total: 5.5 inches; 2 inches fell between 4 p.m. and 5 p.m. on Sunday

Official Reagan-National total (D.C.): 1.4 inches

Pennsylvania

Top snow total: 12 inches near Stahlstown.

Pittsburgh snowfall: 4.9 inches at Pittsburgh International Airport.

Official Harrisburg total: 1.0 inch at Harrisburg International Airport.

Official Philadelphia total: 1.1 inch at Philadelphia International Airport.

Maryland

Top snow total: 16 inches in Redhouse.

Official Baltimore total: 3.2 inches at BWI-Thurgood Marshall International Airport. Reports of 5 inches in the Pimlico area of Baltimore city.

New Jersey

Top snow total: 3 inches in Newport, Malaga, and Galloway Township (Atlantic County).

Delaware

Top snow total: 3.3 inches at Hockessin, near the Pennsylvania border.

New York

Top snow total: 5 inches at Jamestown in western New York.
