Winter Storm Q: Snow Reports and Notables

Winter Storm Q took a lengthy journey from the West Coast to the nation's midsection from Feb. 19 through Feb. 24.

Snow began in the mountains of California on Tuesday, Feb. 19. By Wednesday, Feb. 20, snows spread across the Intermountain West and even parts of the Desert Southwest (see below).

Q spread heavy snow into the Plains states on Wednesday and Thursday, Feb. 20-21, including the Kansas City and Wichita areas.

The original low-pressure center associated with 'Q' weakened over the Great Lakes region on Friday, Feb. 22, but a secondary coastal low spun up south of the New England coast and brought significant snowfall to northern New England late Saturday, Feb. 23, into Sunday, Feb. 24.

Arkansas -

- Top Snow Total - Clarksville - 6 inches

- Several reports of 1/4 to 1/2 inch ice accumulations in northern parts of the state.

Connecticut -

- Top Snow Totals - Tolland, Staffordville, and Coventry - 1 inch

Illinois -

- Top Snow Total - Columbia - 11 inches

- Chicago - 2.7 inches

Iowa -

- Top Snow Total - Sioux City - 10 inches

- Des Moines - 6 inches

Indiana -

- Top Snow Total - Porter - 4 inches

- Evansville - Ice reported on trees, power lines and other surfaces.

Kansas -

- Top Snow Total - Nashville - 18 inches

- Wichita - Reported heavy snow with thunder and lightning for a couple of hours on Thursday morning.Storm total snowfall from February 20-21 is 14.2 inches. This makes "Q" the second biggest snowstorm on record in the city. The all-time record is 15 inches on January 18, 1962.

- Topeka - Thundersnow reported Thursday morning. 9.8 inches officially measured at Billard airport, which makes it the snowiest calendar day since Jan. 9, 1993. Up to 11 inches of snow measured in other parts of the Topeka area.

Kentucky -

- Paducah - Thunderstorms with freezing rain reported. Some reports of tree branches snapping and power outages.

Maine -

- Top Snow Total - Cumberland Center - 13.0 inches

- Portland - Up to 12 inches of snow in parts of the city.

Massachusetts -

- Top Snow Total - Boylston - 10.0 inches

- Boston - 1.8 inches at Logan Airport

Michigan -

- Top Snow Total - Cedar River - 6.7 inches

Missouri -

- Top Snow Total - Hannibal - 13.5 inches

- Kansas City - Snow fell at rates of 2 to 3 inches per hour Thursday morning. 9.2 inches total has accumulated at the Kansas City Int'l Airport. This was the biggest snowstorm since February 24-25, 1993 when 11.1 inches fell.

- Columbia, Mo. - Thundersnow reported from 10:20 a.m. to 12 p.m. on Thursday. Storm total snowfall is 10.2 inches.

- St. Louis, Mo. - Saw a mixture of heavy snow, sleet and some freezing rain. Total snowfall in St. Louis at Lambert Int'l Airport is 5.7 inches.

- Parts of southern Missouri, including Lesterville, Alton and Clever, saw between 1/4" to 1/2" of ice accumulation.

Minnesota -

- Top Snow Total - Mantorville - 9 inches

- Minneapolis - 4.2 inches

Nebraska -

- Top Snow Total - Ayr - 12 inches

- Omaha - Up to 8 inches of snow reported.

New Hampshire -

- Top Snow Total - Rochester - 15.5 inches

Oklahoma -

- Top Snow Total - Alva - 12.5 inches

- Oklahoma City - 1.8 inches of snow Wednesday. A mixture of freezing rain and sleet accompanied by thunder was reported on Thursday morning.

- Tulsa -3.1 inches of snow Wednesday. A mixture of freezing rain and sleet accompanied by thunder was reported on Thursday morning.

Rhode Island -

- Top Snow Total - North Foster - 1.1 inches

Vermont -

- Top Snow Total - Strafford - 6.5 inches

Wisconsin -

- Top Snow Total - Hayward - 8 inches

- Milwaukee - 4.7 inches

Western State Impacts -

-Up to 18 inches of snow was reported in Southern California near Tehachapi.

- 6 inches of snow was measured on Mt. Lemmon near Tucson, Ariz. Snow fell in Tucson as well late in the morning on February 20. As a result, play was suspended for PGA Tour golfers at the Accenture Match Play Championship.

- Denver, Colo. reported 4 inches of snow. Up to 28 inches was reported at Monarch Pass in Colorado.
