Winter Storm Kenan Brings Travel to a Standstill, Leaves Hundreds of Thousands Without Power

Travel by road and air came to a standstill, hundreds of thousands were without power and people were being told to stay home as a powerful winter storm lashed the Northeast Saturday with high winds and heavy snow.

The system, named Winter Storm Kenan by The Weather Channel, brought blizzard conditions to areas including Boston's Logan Airport and the New Jersey coast as well as parts of New York, Connecticut, Delaware and Maine.

Here's a look at what happened as the storm battered the region Saturday:

Snowfall Up to 2 Feet in Some Areas

These are some of the top snowfalls as of Saturday afternoon, compiled by weather.com meteorologists.

-Connecticut: 21.5 inches in Groton

-Massachusetts: 24 inches in Bridgewater; 14.5 inches in Boston

-New Jersey: 21 inches in Bayville; 16 inches in Atlantic City

-New York: 24.1 inches at Islip Airport

-Rhode Island: 21 inches near Warren

83 MPH Wind Gust Reported on Cape Cod

Winds were especially fierce closer to the coast. These are some of the top gusts.

-Connecticut: 65 mph near New London

-Maine: 71 mph near Cape Elizabeth

-Massachusetts: 83 mph near Wellfleet

-New Hampshire: 67 mph near Rye

-New York: 63 mph near Montauk

-Rhode Island: 72 mph near Block Island

Power Outages Top 100,000

More than power outages were being reported in Massachusetts as of about 6:15 p.m. EDT, according to poweroutage.us. That was down from about 120,000 earlier in the evening.

Each of those numbers represents a single customer, meaning hundreds of thousands are without electricity in frigid temperatures.

Remember that generators can be deadly if used improperly. Follow when using one, and never operate a generator indoors or adjacent to a closed space.

Tractor-Trailers Overturn on I-95

Two tractor-trailers tipped over on Interstate 95 near New Rochelle, New York. New York State Police said it happened in the southbound lanes between exits 16 and 17 in Westchester County.

A state police dispatcher told weather.com no one was injured in the incident.

WNBC-TV shared a photo showing both the laying on their sides.

New York-Seattle National Hockey League Matchup Postponed

The Islanders were set to play the Kraken Saturday afternoon at UBS Arena. Instead, the game's been rescheduled for 7 p.m. Wednesday.

COVID-19 Testing Sites Closed in Philadelphia

All city-run testing sites, including health centers and mobile testing vans, were shut down.

Bus, Train Service Suspended

Public transportation routes were affected in some Northeast regions, including New York, New Jersey, Massachusetts.

"Due to severe winter weather impacting the region, NJ TRANSIT has temporarily all bus, River LINE and Access Link services," the New Jersey's public transit agency said in a tweet. "Rail service, Newark Light Rail and HBLR are operating on regular weekend schedules."

In New York, was shut down and some other services were impacted, and cancellations and delays were also reported in Boston.

98% of Flights Canceled at LaGuardia

Nearly every flight scheduled at New York's LaGuardia Airport was canceled. The airport said in a tweet that were called off, or about 98% of the day's scheduled traffic.

At John F. Kennedy International, nearly 900 flights were canceled. That's about of all flights for the day, according to a tweet from the airport.

Newark Liberty reported more than canceled, or about 85%.

The situation was similar at Boston Logan and Philadelphia International.

Early Top Snowfall Totals

Serious snowfall totals started piling up early Saturday morning, particularly on the Jersey Shore. These were the totals as of about 9 a.m.

-15.5 inches in Forked River, New Jersey

-11.4 inches in Port Republic, New Jersey

-10 inches in Cape May, New Jersey

-9.3 inches in Eldora, New Jersey

-7 inches in Babylon, New York

Rhode Island Travel Ban

Rhode Island Gov. Dan Mckee issued a travel ban that prevents all vehicles from driving on the state's roads unless they are carrying emergency supplies. That includes tractor-trailers.

The ban went into effect at 6 a.m. for tractor-trailers and 8 a.m. for all other vehicles. It was set to expire at 8 p.m.
