Winter Storm Kai brought feet of snow to the Sierra Nevada.Snow and wind also affected the northern Rockies and northern Plains.Ice damaged trees and power lines in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan.

Winter Storm Kai spread snow from the Mountain West to the northern Plains and also brought damaging ice to the northern Great Lakes in the first few days of February 2019.

Kai was named early Feb. 2, 2019, when the area of the United States that was under a winter storm warning exceeded the areal criteria of at least 400,000 square kilometers (154,440 square miles).

Kai first brought to California Friday, Feb. 1, into Saturday, Feb. 2. Up to 6 feet of snow piled up in 24 hours at June Mountain Ski Area in California.

On Sunday, Feb. 3, Alpena, Michigan, reported 0.17 inches of ice while Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan, picked up 0.10 inches of ice.

Snow and wind also affected the northern Rockies and northern Plains from Feb. 3-4. Up to 10 inches of snow was measured in Minot and Williston, North Dakota.

Kai finished up by bring damaging ice accumulations to the Upper Peninsula of Michigan on Feb. 4. The ice knocked down tree branches, caused power outages and contributed to numerous accidents.
