Winter Storm Ethan blitzed much of the Northeast on Christmas Day with high snowfall rates accompanied by lightning, and strong, damaging winds, prompting blizzard warnings for some. Ethan started in the central Rockies on Dec. 23rd and moved through the Midwest on Christmas Eve.

Winter Storm Ethan brought a swath of snow from the central Rockies, where totals ranged in feet of snow, across parts of Nebraska, Kansas, Missouri and into the Midwest on Christmas Eve. Ethan brought a white Christmas to much of the mid-section of the country and interior Northeast.

Winds also downed trees in parts of Pennsylvania, New Jersey and Delaware. A tree was downed in Washington D.C. on 19th St. Northwest, according to the National Weather Service.

Ethan's impacts were most felt in New England where some received snow at a rate of up to 3-5 inches per hour, and thundersnow was reported from eastern Massachusetts to eastern Maine.

Snow at the rate of 1 inch per hour was reported Christmas morning in Bangor, Maine, Nashua, New Hampshire, Hartford, Connecticut, and Albany, New York, among other locations. Overnight Christmas Eve, .

Ethan's coastal low-pressure system rapidly intensified as it developed off the New England coast and moved northeastward into the Bay of Fundy.

Rare blizzard warnings were issued for strong winds and lowered visibility on Christmas for parts of southern Maine and neighboring coastal New Hampshire. Snowfall rates of up to 4 inches per hour were recorded.

Thundersnow was heard during Christmas afternoon in downeast Maine, with snowfall rates of 2-3 inches per hour.

National Weather Service staffin Cumberland County, Maine, north of Portland, measured an incredible 3.7 inch-per-hour snowfall rate just after 10:30 a.m. EST on Christmas Day.

Visibility in Otisfield, Maine, was reduced to a mere 750 feet in wind-driven snow.

A number of locations had already picked up over 6 inches of snow, topped by a pair of 10-inch snow totals in Windham and near Shapleigh, Maine.
