Winter Storm Eris (air-is; from Greek mythology: the goddess of discord) blanketed parts of the West in snow and provided a white Christmas in the Rockies, and not just over the higher elevations. It then moved east into the Great Plains and upper Midwest during the first half of the post-holiday weekend.
Here's a round-up of some of Eris' heavier snowfalls:
- 30 inches near Roscoe, Montana- 13.5 inches near Galena, Idaho- 12 inches in Chama, New Mexico- 15 inches in Grand Mesa, Colorado- 13.9 inches near Pocatello, Idaho- 10 inches in West Glacier, Montana- 6 inches in St. Paul, Minnesota- 6 inches in Lawton, Oklahoma- 4.2 inches near North Platte, Nebraska- 4.2 inches in Elgin, Nebraska
In addition, up to 6.5 inches of snow fell in the Salt Lake City area through Christmas evening and 19.7 inches was reported at the George Creek Snotel (elevation 8,994 feet) in Utah. The Green Mountain Snotel (elevation 8,000 feet) in Nevada reported 19 inches through Christmas afternoon.
Denver saw 3.4 inches of snow on Christmas Day which is the third highest snowfall on Christmas since 1882. Snow showers continued in Denver through Friday.
Snow accumulated in the Minneapolis area Friday night with 4 inches of snow reported in St. Paul, Minnesota early Saturday morning.
Colorado
Roads in the Denver metro area became slick as soon as the snow started falling. The Colorado State Patrol told the Denver Post that crashes were happening too fast for them to respond.Flights were delayed up to 30 minutes at Denver International Airport.The Colorado Department on Transportation said travelers should be prepared for heavy Interstate 70 traffic in the mountains and adverse conditions.
Utah
Chains or snow tires were required for vehicles heading up to ski resorts in northern Utah's Big Cottonwood and Little Cottonwood Canyons, Utah Department of Transportation spokesman Adan Carrillo said.Utah Highway Patrol Sgt. Todd Royce said Thursday evening that officials had not yet tallied how many accidents occurred on state roads, but no fatal accidents had been reported.At Salt Lake City International Airport, weather did not affect airport operations.
Minnesota
The Minnesota State Patrol reported 310 car crashes throughout the state due to the snow that left one person dead and another 39 injured after as much as 6 inches of snow fell throughout the state
