Nov 14, 2024 12:57 PM

Traveling to visit family and friends was a major hassle across much of the East Coast as Winter Storm Cato brought a rainy and snowy wallop to roadways and major airport hubs.

As many as 20 million people were under winter storm warnings in the Northeast on the day before Thanksgiving as travelers tried to navigate slushy roads and air travel delays.

Motorists saw a slower than normal holiday drive, and air travelers experienced plenty of delays at airports. The FAA said some arriving flights at Newark Liberty International Airport were delayed by more than 3 hours around midday Wednesday. Flightaware.com said about 3 of every 8 flights departing from Newark had been either delayed or canceled by 4 p.m.

Speaking of air travel, there were more than 4,700 cancelations and 700 delays at airports across the U.S. Wednesday, according to FlightAware.

The highest snow totals so far have been in some of the high terrain of West Virginia where up to 20" was reported.

Other notable snow totals include places like Binghamton, New York, where 10" fell. 10" also accumulated in Falls Township, Pennsylvania (just northwest of Scranton). Fairfield, New York saw a foot of snow, and Peru, Massachusetts got 13.5".

A cold front that swept through the central and eastern U.S. earlier in the week stalled just off the East Coast. Low pressure spun up along the tail end of the front over the Gulf of Mexico on Tuesday, and strengthend along the Eastern Seaboard on Wednesday.

The result impacted millions within the Northeast.

Over a foot of snow fell in parts of the mid-Atlantic region, and Cato dumped high snow totals in parts of New England as well. All that wintry precipitation made for slick, treacherous roads for the estimated 41.3 million people traveling for the Thanksgiving holiday, according to AAA estimates.

As of 8:30am Thanksgiving morning, over 430,000 people were without power in 12 states and Washington DC.

Below is a list of notable snowfall totals throughout the region:

- Paw Paw, WV: 20 inches- Laconia, NH: 16.5 inches- Orwell, VT: 16 inches- Peru, MA: 15.1 inches- Warrensburg, NY: 14.6 inches- Sideling Hill, PA: 14.5 inches- Monterey, VA: 14 inches- Montague, NJ: 12.5 inches- Hartland, CT: 10.4 inches

The wet, heavy snow downed numerous trees and powerlines throughout the Mid-Atlantic and the Northeast, causing many to rething their Thanksgiving cooking plans. Below is a list of notable power outages that occurred during the event:

- New Hampshire: 160,000- Maine: 90,000- New York: 47,000- Massachusetts: 25,000- New Jersey: 25,000
