The crisp autumn air means it's time to pick out a pumpkin, don a costume and get ready to trick or treat. And it's been that way for a long time.

The history of Halloween goes back a long way - about 2000 years - with its roots as deep as the pre-Christian, pagan past of Europe, according to Random History. It's believed that costumes entered the celebrations early on, and that supernatural beings like ghouls and monsters have been go-to options for much of the time that the holiday has been celebrated.

While the holiday has evolved over the centuries, morphing into a Christian celebration about 1200 years ago, with the modern notion oftrick-or-treatingentering the picture when Halloween came to the U.S. in the 1930s, according to the Huffington Post --the photos above show that some ideas for costumes are pretty durable - while others are...less so.

These vintage photos of Halloween celebrations from the 1865 to 1975, may be pretty recent by the standards of the holiday, but the costumes in the photos above can seem a world away from the store bought outfits most people opt for these days. Regardless: Some things change, but witches and goblins are always in style.
