Tropical Storm Humberto will intensify into a hurricane and pose a threat to Bermuda later this week while also generating high surf and rip currents along the Southeast coast.

Humberto is moving northward away from the Bahamas and will make a sharp turn to the northeast by late Sunday or Monday.

Wind shear is expected to weaken and Humberto will be moving over warm water so further strengthening is likely, and Humberto is expected to become a hurricane by Sunday night or early Monday.

Humberto could be a hurricane threat to Bermuda later Wednesday into Thursday, possibly as a Category 2.

It's too early to determine the severity of any impacts in Bermuda, but residents and visitors there should begin preparations.

For now, Humberto will bring high surf and dangerous rip currents to the Southeast coast. Beachgoers from the east coast of Florida to North Carolina should stay out of the water through early this week.

Humberto will also bring localized heavy rainfall to the Bahamas through Sunday.
