During this span of 59 days, the percentage of the United States covered by snow peaked at 66.9 percent on Dec. 9. This was just after Winter Storms and laid down widespread swaths of snow across the country.

In all, the animation captures eight of our nine named winter storms this season, which you can match the snow cover from to the dates listed in the table at the left. Not shown is , which buried the northern Plains with snow in early October.

As the animation concludes, you can see that snow cover across the country decreased substantially by the middle of January. On Jan. 16, the percentage of the country covered by snow dipped to 25.7 percent, which is the lowest percentage since Dec. 3.
Also notable on the snow cover analysis of the winter so far is the lack of snow in California's Sierra Nevada, where the drought continues to worsen.
