Taiwan is home to eight national parks, all established after 1972, and one of the country's most popular is Taroko National Park. Named for the Truku aboriginal tribe that once lived in the region and were renowned for their weaving and hunting skills, today their hunting paths have been transformed into the dozens of trails that snake through the rocky terrain.

At the heart of the park is the Taroko Gorge, a mammoth rock formation made of limestone and marble, filled with tunnels and criss-crossed by hanging bridges. According to Atlas Obscura, one of the park's more breathtaking paths is the Tunnel of Nine Turns, constructed in 1996, that takes drivers dramatically close to the edge of the gorge.

In addition to the natural marble sculptures of the gorge, visitors can see the Liwu River, the peak of Nanhushan, and the Qingshui Cliffs that drop precipitously down to the Pacific Ocean, says Rough Guide. CNN also recommends visiting the Eternal Springs Shrine, the Hsiang-Te temple or the Baiyang Waterfall.

To get to Taroko National Park, travelers can take a car or go by bus, then hop out and explore the terrain on foot.Cycling is also a popular way to get around the park and take in the mountain vistas.
