Surreal Seascapes from Around North America (PHOTOS)

Canadian photographer Jeff Friesen had to battle the “unimaginable” environment of Nova Scotia to capture the beautiful seascapes that comprise his “Beyond Here” series.

“The weather changes so frequently [in Nova Scotia], it’s often hard to tell what season it is,” Friesen told weather.com. “The good thing about the volatile weather is that the sky is always interesting… an unchanging clear blue day is almost unknown here.”

In his “Beyond Here” series these unpredictable weather conditions are what make his photos interesting. According to Friesen, the different cloud types also played a big role in his series.

Friesen discovered his unique technique for shooting, making his seascape photo appear slightly abstract “spontaneously” after a long day of shooting.

While he was on a shoot near Peggy’s Cove, Nova Scotia struggling to set up his tripod on ice-covered rocks, he decided to remove his camera from the tripod and take a few shots just holding the camera. He knew that he should be using his tripod because of the limited light, but he went the hand-held route anyway.

“Knowing that the resulting images would be blurry, I decided to deliberately move the camera during exposure,” Friesen explained. “It felt freeing, so I started taking other ‘incorrect’ photos that were blurry, overexposed and underexposed.”

After he collected all of the “incorrect” photos he combined aspects of them to create single photos, resulting in unique, visually stunning images.
