Winter Storm Gail dumped more snow in one storm than some Northeast cities saw all of last winter.

Winter 2019-20 produced paltry snowfall amounts in many Northeast cities. In some cases, even a small amount of snow from Gail could top last season's totals.

New York City's Central Park only picked up 4.8 inches of snow all of last winter, 21 inches fewer than an average snow season and only 2 inches more than their least snowy season on record, 1972-73. Only three other seasons since 1869 were less snowy than 2019-20 in New York.

The deficit was even larger in Allentown, Pennsylvania, where snowfall was 27.6 inches below average. Last season's total of 5.3 inches also ranked as the least snowy on record in the city.

Farther south, neither Philadelphia nor Washington D.C. tallied an inch of snow for the entire season combined. Only the 1972-73 season – a trace of snow – was less snowy in Philadelphia than 2019-20.

Baltimore tied its third-least-snowy winter on record with a seasonal total of just 1.8 inches.

Snowfall totals last winter compared to the average for an entire season.

Allentown (11.5 inches) and New York City (10.5 inches) each more than double last season's totals.

Philadelphia International Airport's 6.6 inch total was 22 times their second least snowy season on record in 2019-20.

Despite lying on the battleground changing from snow to rain, Baltimore (BWI Airport) managed to almost match last season's total, picking up 1.6 inches of snow.

Washington's Reagan National Airport, however, will have to continue their long wait. Only a trace of snow was recorded, there, before they changed to rain.
