A strong cold front brought the season's first snow to parts of the Midwest and Northeast on Monday and Tuesday, Nov. 11-12. A disturbance preceding the front brought the season's first snow to parts of northern New England on Sunday, Nov. 10.

The slideshow above contains photos of this early snow, which was mostly light. One exception was extreme southwestern Lower Michigan, where up to 17 inches of snow fell in a narrow lake-effect snow band over Berrien County on Tuesday morning.

Here are some of the locations that saw the first measurable snow of the 2013-2014 winter weather season, along with the dates of the first snow in 2012-13:

– 1.2 inches Monday (last year: Dec. 18) – 0.4 inch Monday (last year: Dec. 20) – 0.5 inch Monday (last year: Nov. 23) – 0.1 inch Monday (last year: Nov. 12) – 0.3 inch Monday (last year: Oct. 30) – 0.7 inch Monday (last year: Nov. 25) – 0.3 inch Tuesday morning (last year: Dec. 28) – 0.7 inch Tuesday (last year: Dec. 21) – 0.1 inch Tuesday (last year: Nov. 7) – 0.5 inch Tuesday (last year: Nov. 7) – 1.2 inches Tuesday (last year: Oct. 29)

In addition, areas as far south as Columbia, S.C. and New Bern, N.C. picked up a trace of snow Tuesday. Boston, Hartford, New York City (Central Park), Philadelphia, Baltimore (BWI Airport), Richmond, Va., Raleigh and Charlotte also picked up their first trace of snow for the season Tuesday.

According to the National Weather Service, this was the third earliest snowfall on record in 124 years in Columbia, S.C.
