Portugal Sets Clean Energy Milestone By Running on Renewable Energy For Four Days Straight
Nov 15, 2024 12:23 AM

For four consecutive days, Portugal ran on nothing but renewable energy, breaking a clean energy record.

According to Portugal-based ZERO System Sustainable Land Association, from 6:45 a.m. on May 7 till 5:45 p.m. on May 11, Portugal was fully powered by renewable sources of energy such as solar, wind and hydropower. This amounted to a total of 107 hours with no need to resort to any source of non-renewable energy, particularly the production of thermal power plants to coal or natural gas.

The renewable electricity production sources and the Portuguese electricity grid management capacity exceeded a difficult test against a background of tiny interconnections, particularly between Spain and France, also according to the association. The energy gained from renewable sources still exported a significant amount of electricity.

Portugal has been very proactive when it comes to renewable energy. This isn’t the first time the country has powered itself on renewable sources alone.

At the end of 2011, the country met all of its electricity demands with renewable energy for a few hours, the Christian Science Monitor reports. And in 2013, Portugal received almost 26 percent of its electricity from renewable sources, an amount that increased to 63 percent in 2014.

The country’s feats have earned praise from the International Energy Agency (IEA), whose 2016 review of Portugal says its policies have been “strongly oriented towards its ambition to become a major player in the application of renewable energies … Portugal should be commended for its achievements and its ambitions in large-scale deployment of renewable energy.”

Portugal's size and population also helped make this energy milestone possible. Currently, the country has a population of more than 10 million and geographically, it’s a little larger than Maine at 35,603 square miles.

“These data show that Portugal can be more ambitious in a transition to a net consumption of electricity from 100% renewable [sources], with huge reductions of emissions of greenhouse gases,” ZERO wrote in the statement.
