When Apple ditched Google maps on its iOS 6 software earlier this year, there was loathing amongst users. Now, police in one town have gone as far as calling Apple maps "potentially life-threatening."
The app had dangerously misplaced the Australian town of Mildura 45 miles from its actual location. Apple maps wrongly led people looking for Mildura into "the dusty, sun-baked trails of Murray-Sunset National Park," according to the Guardian.
Area police have dealt with four separate cases of maps leading people in a perilously wrong direction. One man was stranded in the national park in 114 degree heat for more than 24 hours. Three others also had to be rescued.
The media jumped on the story of misplaced Mildura. Area police issued a warning on its website, calling it a "potentially life-threatening issue."
"There's no water, and you can get bogged down in the sand," local reporter Toby Prime explained to the Guardian. Prime also says cell phone reception is spotty, which makes getting lost even more dangerous.
Apple has now redrawn the map to show Mildura's correct location.
