The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration has released a map depicting the ongoing record-setting blast of arctic air in stunning detail.
Using data from its High Resolution Rapid Refresh (HRRR) model, NOAA released a map showing expected low temperatures across the Lower 48 for the night of Nov. 13-14. Below-freezing temperatures are depicted as far south as the Gulf Coast states. The HRRR model, in development for five years, finally became "operational" -- in other words, ready for everyday use in real-time weather forecasting -- in September.
The slideshow above starts with NOAA's map. But we couldn't stop there. Using our own high-resolution temperature data, we take you closer to the polar plunge with 11 maps showing how the bitterly cold air charged across the Canadian border and sent temperatures crashing across a huge swath of the country.
