Hong Kong is one of the most densely populated regions of the world. With only 424 square miles,it is home to more than 7 million people. So when it comes to housing its residents, the only way to go is up. Australia-based photographer Peter Stewart was inspired by Hong Kong's cramped apartments and towering skyscrapers, and the result was a stunning photo series on the city's vertical views.
"The biggest difference between east and west is that of space," Stewart told weather.com. "In a vastly populated city such as Hong Kong, space is difficult to come by. Despite the chaotic appearance of the exterior facades, apartments here can be surprisingly luxurious and modern on the inside."

Upon closer look, the overwhelming images reveal a bit about residents' lifestyles. Air conditioners protrude from windows and laundry hangs from balcony railings. Stewart said that a common problem locals come across is that of storage. To accommodate for their small spaces, people in Hong Kong often hang their laundry outside and have small window sill gardens.
"Whenever I look at the photos I wonder who's in that apartment, and what they are doing, and this just gives so much depth to the photos and I can sit looking at them for hours," Stewart told The Daily Mail.
